The film, called Judy, starts principle photography in London today - as confirmed by a Twitter account for the project.

“#JUDY starts principal photography in London today, starring Academy Award winner, Renée Zellweger as Judy Garland!” it declared.

Zellweger’s casting was announced late last year, with the film set to pick up in the winter of 1968 as Garland arrived for a run of concerts in the capital.

The script has been written by The Crown scribe Tom Edge, with direction by Rupert Goold.

It’s been confirmed that some of Garland’s best known songs will feature in the film, which will also star Michael Gambon, Jessie Buckley and Rufus Sewell.

Garland is a true showbusiness icon, who passed away in 1969 at the age of 47.

This is another big high-profile role for Zellweger, who has steered clear of headline-hitting movies in recent years - save for Bridget Jones’s Baby in 2016.

Her current slate is quite quiet: she’s recently wrapped work on Best Day of my Life alongside Sarah Jessica Parker and Taylor Kinney, but Judy is the only other upcoming project currently on her slate.

Goold is certainly a safe pair of hands for the project, having built up huge success as one of the world’s most renowned theatre directors.

This may well be his most prolific screen directing gig yet, though: his only other cinematic film was 2015’s True Story, which had mixed reviews.

Judy is out later this year.
