Man Utd news: Jose Mourinho told to axe these five players this summer

The first name on Burley’s list is Luke Shaw, who has been publicly criticised by Mourinho on several occasions.

Shaw will consider his future in the summer and Burley reckons he should leave to benefit his career.

“It’s a shame really because he came back from that broken leg,” the former Chelsea midfielder told ESPN FC.

“I’ve always been a fan of the player, I think he’s got a big future, I just don’t think it’s going to be at Manchester United, not with this manager.

“Maybe the pressure of playing there he needs to get away.”

The next two players up for the chop are Matteo Darmian, who has made just five Premier League appearances this season, and Daley Blind, who has not featured since January.

“He’s just a squad player even though he’s an international,” Burley said of Darmian.

“But again, I think Jose Mourinho thinks he can probably do better.”

“The trouble is you can’t just get rid of everybody, it will come down to player preference.

“But if he is saying he needs seven or eight out at least, then I’m going to say Blind is leaving.”

Burley also does not believe Chris Smalling has improved since being criticised by Mourinho last season and could be on his way.

“(Victor) Lindelof, (Eric) Bailly, Phil Jones, I think there’s a possibility he (Smalling) will leave,” the Scot said.

“You’ll remember back to last year the big criticism of Jones and Smalling from Mourinho. I don’t think that’s gone away, so there is potential for him to leave.”

Finally Burley says Marouane Fellaini, who is out of contract in the summer, will be on his way.

“Great professional, did well at Everton, international, plays for Belgium, I understand he’s a big threat from set pieces,” Burley said.

“But if Man United want to get back to the top of the three domestically and in Europe, then Marouane Fellaini around the place isn’t going to work.”
