BBC weather: Britain DIVIDED as thunderstorms bring Christmas rush hour CHAOS

Those hoping to make a Christmas getaway tonight should be wary for heavy and thundery showers, which are pushing their way into England and Wales this evening. The BBC Weather forecaster also warned of a split in temperatures, hitting up to 14C in the south of England with single figures further north. BBC Breakfast meteorologist Matt Taylor said: “This morning it’s not looking particularly brilliant out there at the moment, but things will improve for many, brightening up across many parts of the UK. But throughout today it’s going to be a bit blustery across the south, and here not feeling particularly festive, temperatures above where they should be.

“Through the night we see some weather fronts push from west to east across the UK, you’ll notice on that chart we do have a weather front at the moment trailing across parts of East Anglia, northern England, north Wales, towards the likes of Northern Ireland.

“This is a zone where you’ve got cloud and further heavy rain to come through this morning, south of it we’ll see some patchy cloud, rain and drizzle, as we go through the next few hours."

But by the time we hit 9am we should see some good sunny spells developing across southern areas.

“Staying pretty damp and with some heavy rain by the end of the morning rush hour across northern England, and parts of north Wales and into Northern Ireland.”

Mr Taylor added: “Far north of Scotland you’ve got some sunshine, bit of frost to start the day, and here we’ll continue to see some sunshine at times.

“Central areas always remain cloudy, the rain becoming a little less heavy, breeze picking up across the south and temperatures today could hit 14C across the south of England.

“Single figure temperatures further north. So big north south split as far as the way things feel. By the end of the day we’ll see some heavy showers into the west of Wales, tonight they’ll push across England and Wales.

“Some of those could be on the heavy and thundery side so bear that in mind if you’re about to make the big getaway this evening.”

Tomorrow will be fairly cloudy across Scotland, with rain clearing overnight followed by showers in the west.

It will be brighter for the rest of the UK, with a few odd showers in north-western parts.

Sunday will be wet and cloudy in the south, mostly clearing in the evening, while northern parts remain very foggy but mainly dry.

Christmas Eve will bring drier weather with high pressure developing across the UK, with a lot of cloud and persisting fog on Christmas Day.
