Brexiteers form secret clubs to escape the daily bile from REMOANERS

The club, Leavers for Britain, was founded in November last year by a Brexiteer who was fed up of constantly having her views shouted down. Lucy Harris, a 28-year-old classically trained singer, founded the group in London and there are now more than 30 groups across the country. Speaking to the Financial Times, Ms Harris said the group allows people to “let off steam” in a world dominated by Remainers. And it is believed similar get-togethers are being held across the country.

Ms Harris quit her job in publishing to establish the national group and even parted with her Remain-voting boyfriend.

She said a man yelled at her and called her a racist for carrying a bag with the slogan “The EU’s not my bag” when travelling on the Underground last year.

Since then she has met many people who say they have been too fearful to “come out” to colleagues, friends and family.

The group now has more than 4,000 members and they are largely located in Remain voting cities such as Cambridge, Glasgow and Bristol.

Ms Harris said: “People who voted Leave are told they are bigots or stupid.

“They are decent, good people.

“They deserve the benefit of the doubt.”

The group does not charge a membership fee but does accept locations.

Ms Harris said: “The London group has a lot of City boys and they are generous.”

The groups’ members do not agree on their reasons for wanting to leave Europe.

Some sited EU bureaucracy while others wanted an end to free movement.

At a meeting of the Manchester on January 18, most members sought a renewal of politics, with “arrogant” MPS and peers denounced as “nobodies”.

But Ms Harris says she has no desire to form a political party.

She said: “It is a social experiment. People used to gather in pubs and social clubs to talk politics.

“It is a time to talk about principles and values.

“Theres not time for that in a party.

“There’s too much aggravation. It’s all out war.”
