April the giraffe LIVE cam: April 'READY when you are' zookeepers tease in April update

April’s carers at Animal Adventure Park in Harpursville, New York, are ready for her livestream birth “whenever she is”. Just after midnight on Thursday, March 14, April’s zookeepers shared an exciting update on April’s odd behaviour. April’s veterinarian, Dr Tim, observed an unusual distrust of treats and “zoning out”, typically associated with the labour process. The vet also reported swollen udders, a massive back end and relaxing muscles, suggesting April could be in the final stretch of her pregnancy.

Animal Adventure Park said: “Many viewers were shocked to see Dr Tim in the barn around 5.30am this morning.

“While it was a scheduled early top, April’s behaviour had him reconsider his day’s plan.

“April was not responsive to some of the Dr’s treat offerings and hand examinations.

“This behaviour could suggest some of that trance-like focus during the labour process – but yet again – the carried on, along with April’s antics.”

All of April’s other examinations went according to plan and since the update, thousands of people have flooded to April’s livestream.

At 10.13am GMT on Thursday morning, more than 26,000 people were watching the pregnant giraffe slowly pace around her pen.

Most of the viewers are anxiously waiting for the mother-to-be to go into labour without warning, prompting fans to keep an eye out on the Twitter hashtag #GiraffeWatch2019.

Animal Adventure Park said today: “Udders full, back end swollen, muscles/ligaments relaxed. Ready when you are April!”

“Everyone thinks this is so great but I personally hold you responsible for my anxiety, insomnia and lack of productivity at work.”

Courtney George said: “She looked like she was gonna finally birth today based on what I saw. I was so excited.

“Was glued to the screen for six hours today and nothing.”

Maureen Farrell DiSario said: “It still looks to me as if the baby is laying across her belly and not really far in the birth canal.

“I think her belly markedly changing shape would need to happen before I believe birth is imminent.

“Like I said a few days ago, this ‘any time now’ lasted a few weeks when she had Taj. Seems like deja vu to me.”

And Rose Shreyer said: “You know our girl, she loves to keep us on our toes.”
