Man arrested as Jeremy Corbyn hit by EGG thrown by ‘pro-Brexit campaigner’ at mosque visit

The Labour leader was struck while visiting Finsbury Park Mosque in north London on Sunday. A 41-year-old man was arrested after Mr Corbyn was targeted with the egg just before 4pm. Sky News have reported the man is thought to be a pro-Brexit demonstrator.

Mr Corbyn was unhurt during the incident which took place during the Visit My Mosque Day event.

He had earlier met worshippers at the Muslim Welfare Centre and continued his visit after being attacked with the egg.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman confirmed a member of parliament was hit in the incident.

A Met Police spokesman said: “A 41-year-old man was quickly detained by officers on scene and arrested on suspicion of assault.

“He is currently in custody at a north London police station.”

Shadow Home Secretary Diane Abbott also took part in the annual Visit My Mosque Day event.

Onlookers handed Mr Corbyn red roses as he went into one venue.

The egg attack come after the Labour leader backtracked and vowed to support a second Brexit referendum.

His decision sparked anger from Brexiteers who are against holding a 'People's Vote.'

In May 2001, Labour’s then-deputy prime minister John Prescott was hit by an egg during an election campaign event.

The missile was launched by a man who Mr Prescott punched on the chin after being struck.

Ex-UKIP leader Nigel Farage and then-Labour leader Ed Miliband have also been egged during walkabouts.
