BBC Weather: UK braces for HEAVY RAIN and thunderstorms as HUGE cloud system moves in

Weather has warned Brits could be hit with heavy rain and thunder this weekend as a cloud systems shifts across the country on Saturday. Despite temperatures remaining warm, and sunny spells at times, BBC Weather warned some areas could be hit by the unsettled conditions. BBC Weather forecaster, Matt Taylor, said: “The big picture for the weekend is low pressure to the southeast of us, still means there will be some rain around, this time the northern half of the country.

“Scotland having a cloudier and cooler day with outbreaks of rain and heading into Northern Ireland too.

“For England and Wales though with light winds, where you get the sunshine, it will feel pleasantly warm. Quite strong that sunshine at the moment.

“But, there will be a few heavy and thundery showers around. They will be slow moving, get caught under those you could get pretty wet indeed.”

Looking at the forecast for Friday, the BBC Weather forecaster added: “If we look at the satellite you can see this zone of cloud. This is what we have been watching, coming in from the east.

“It stretches right across the UK at the moment, but the rain is mainly across parts of western England, particularly northwest England, Wales, southern Scotland and now edging towards the Isle of Man.

“Continue to push its way towards Northern Ireland as we go through the rest of this morning. Then it will rain for a little time before things brighten up.

“Brightening up quite quickly this afternoon across Scotland, northern England, along eastern coasts.

“Bit of sunshine for a time in the Midlands, but through much of central and southern England and Wales, it’s going to stay fairly cloudy for much of the day. Some further showers at times.”

meteorologist Greg Dewhurst added: “After an unsettled weekend and start to the new week, things will settle down again as we go through the week.

“It might not be quite as nice as we have seen over the past couple of days, but all in all it doesn’t look bad at all.”

The Met Office forecast for Saturday reads: “Northern Scotland will stay cloudy and damp all day. Mist and murk may persist near eastern coasts.

“Elsewhere, warm sunshine will be interrupted by showers, some heavy.”

And for the start of next week, adds: “Early cloud and mist may persist near eastern coasts but clear elsewhere, leading to warm sunny spells and showers, perhaps thundery at times, retreating to the east by Tuesday.”

Leading bookmakers have even slashed odds on this weekend seeing the wettest day of the year so far from 8-1 to 2-1.

Alex Apati of Ladbrokes said: "It's time to get the brollies back out over the next few days heavy rainfall set to drench the UK."
