Vienna explosion PICTURED as two buildings collapse causing multiple injuries

Several people have been injured in the Austrian capital with police, paramedics and firefighters currently on the scene. Officers say the cause of the incident was a gas explosion. Sputnik News reports the explosion happened at 4.30pm local time.

One of the two buildings now have a massive crater in the front of it as a result of the incident.

Police said in a statement on Twitter: “#News: In the area # Pressgasse / Schäffergasse shortly after 16:30 o'clock an explosion (probably gas explosion) occurred.

“Several floors of up to two multi-party houses have collapsed in part. Police, Rescue and Fire Department are increasingly on the ground!

“Further information will follow!”

The exact amount of people injured is not yet known.

Emergency services arrived on the scene 30 minutes ago.

Schäffergasse is located in the city centre of Vienna.

Vienna itself is north-east of Austria.

Social media users took to Twitter to share their concerns at the news.

One, who posted an emoji of a four-leafed clover - believed to be lucky - said: “Wish that no one was seriously harmed!”

Another said: “Appalling. What has happened there?

“A Gas explosion .... Get well soon the injured!”
