BBC Weather: Month's rain falls in four hours in UK as thunderstorms barrel across Europe

The UK sits under two Met Office weather warnings on Wednesday. One covers western Scotland and predicts further thunderstorms to strike. The other forecasts heavy rain across the Midlands and the whole of northern England - particularly in Yorkshire where Sky News reported that nearly a month’s rain reportedly fell in just four hours. The BBC warned powerful thunderstorms were representative of the continent as a whole.

BBC meteorologist Phil Avery explained: “There has been a concentration of thunderstorms across the British Isles - low pressure here.

“But we’ve seen in the heart of continental Europe as well.

“And a very big area of low pressure has dominated across the Baltic states and also western Russia.

“On Wednesday we will just be pushing the bulk of those thunderstorms a little bit further towards the east.

“Once you drift into the northeastern quarter of France, the Low Countries, up to Germany and Denmark - then, again, you’re back into that more showery regime.

“The temperatures showing signs of wanting to recover across parts of eastern Europe."

BBC meteorologist Tomasz Schafernaker added: “The forecast for Wednesday suggests temperatures in the low-thirties around Greece, the Greek islands, throughout the Mediterranean as well.

“Same goes for London too. But quite a few heavy showers there developing for parts of Germany and further east into Poland as well.”

Yesterday a bridge in Yorkshire collapsed after a colossal summer storm passed through the Dales.

Malham Tarn in the Yorkshire Dales had 3.2 inches (82.2mm) of rain in 24 hours, the majority in the space of four hours.

The monthly average in the area for this time of year is 3.5in (89mm).
