Mr Morrison said that he has already congratulated Boris Johnson on his new appointment as Prime Minister and he is keen to establish a new trade teal between the two world powers. He said: “UK and Australia have the best of relationships and I have no doubt that Boris and I will be able to take this to a new level in the post-Brexit era.” Mr Morrison has been upbeat about Mr Johnson’s appointment, saying that he believes that “he will bring a new opportunity”.

The UK is Australia’s eighth-largest trading partner and the two-way trade has been valued at £15billion.

He said: ”Moving very quickly, when the opportunity presents, to be able to move to an agreement between the United Kingdom and Australia on trade.

"We will be one of the first cabs off the rank, as has been the case in our discussions with the UK for some time."

Canberra’s trade minister, Simon Birmingham, said this week that Australia could help the UK to get deal that would guarantee the free flow of agricultural and business products between the UK and Australia.

Mr Birmingham said: “That will put us in a position where if the UK wanted to get the deal done in a period of months, maybe even weeks, well we would be willing to move as swiftly as they were able to”.

Mr Morrison said: "This is a time of change for the United Kingdom, and I think the new prime minister will bring a new opportunity, I think, to resolve what had been some very difficult issues, and that it is in the interest not only of the United Kingdom and Europe to resolve these matters, but for the order global economy to get some resolution of these issues.

"So I wish him all the best on those matters, and it was good to be able to catch up with him last night and I look forward to our meeting.”
