US war with Iran? US troops at risk as Tehran 'considers' using proxies to attack

US Representative Mac Thornberry warned  that any attack on US troops will “absolutely” result in America fighting back with all of its military might. Mr Thornberry said Iran is “intentionally dialing up tensions” with the US to create a crisis in the “hopes of dividing the US and Europe".

The Texas representative told Fox News: “There has been information that that is one of the things they are considering – allowing their proxies to attack our troops in Iraq or elsewhere. So that is very significant.

“Again, I think Iran is following the North Korea playbook. They dial up tensions, create a crisis and hope that they can get some sanctions relief when everybody comes rushing in with relief saying that is it not as bad as you thought it could be.

“For us, I think the key is to stay close with Europe. And now there are indications that the Europeans are concerned about this increasing enrichment.

“Because that violated what they thought they were achieving in the nuclear agreement.

“Stay close with Europe and keep a strong military presence. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that these tensions started when we did not have a carrier presence in the Persian Gulf.

“So, they are watching these things. Now we do have a stronger military presence and I think that is good.”

In May US officials revealed they had intelligence indicating Tehran had urged its proxies to go after US targets as tensions began to escalate between the two states.

Iran and the US have been at odds over the decision of US President Donald Trump to ditch the landmark 2015 nuclear deal.

In response, the Middle Eastern country announced it would pass the 3.67 percent enrichment.

Speaking to press before boarding Air Force One: “You enrich for one reason and I won’t tell you what the reason is.

“But it’s no good; they better be careful.”

Iranian politician Ali Larijani insisted that the country “did not seek to gain nuclear weapons”.

Mr Larijani also insisted that Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei has banned the use of nuclear weapons despite Trump’s accusations against the Republic.

Michael Knights, a senior fellow at The Washington Institute think tank, told NBC News: “The US can destroy the Iranian navy in a day, but it will find it is attacked in six countries by proxy networks.”

But one of Tehran’s most senior military officials claimed the US was “worried” about a war with Iran.

Speaking of the country’s progression in military strength, Major General Hossein Salami, who heads up the Iranian Revolutionary Guards, praised his country’s armed forces.

He said: “In the military sphere, we have completely closed the path for the enemy.

“In the current situation it is the enemies who are worried about the outbreak of war and this worry is apparent in their physical and tactical behaviour."
