Lyon stabbing: Attacker on the loose in France after knife attack - one dead, six injured

An official with the Lyon regional administration said that one suspected assailant was detained and at least one other suspect in the attack on Saturday was on the run. The official said the motive for the violence in the suburb of Villeurbanne was unknown. He said national security forces were not involved in the search, just a few dozen local police officers and a helicopter.

Local police unions said it was too soon to know of any reason to suspect terror.

Local news said the attack happened at 4pm local time (5pm GMT).

The fatally injured is a 19-year-old male.

France remains on high alert after Islamic extremist attacks in 2015 and 2016.

Local news also reports the suspect is armed with a large meat fork.

Up to 50 firefighters also attended the scene along the RAID unit of specialist French police.

Lyon mayor Gerard Collomb was at a nearby football game when the attack took place. He said: "I am extremely shocked by the attack that has just occurred in the Lyon area during which one person died and several others injured, some seriously.

"Being nearby, I went immediately to share my support for the victims, transport workers and the police and relief forces."

He flocked to the scene and gave another statement to reporters.

He said: “We have to wait for the conclusions of the investigation. As long as we do not have those conculsions, we can not say anything. We must remain very careful.”
