Tom Watson resigns: Why is Tom Watson stepping down? Resignation letter IN FULL

In his letter to Mr Corbyn, Mr Watson said his decision to step down was "personal, not political".

He thanked the Labour Leader for "the decency and courtesy you have shown me over the last four years, even in difficult times".

Mr Watson added: "“Our many shared interests are less well known than our political differences, but I will continue to devote myself to the things we often talk about: gambling reform, music and arts, stopping press intrusion, obesity and public health and of course horticulture and cycling.”

His decision brings an end to a fractious four years with Jeremy Corbyn, with the pair having clashed repeatedly over party policy and Mr Corbyn's leadership decisions.
