If you shudder at the sign announcing “6 Orange’s £2” or flinch when someone sends you a card saying “Many happy return’s” you’ll be saddened at the news that John Richards, 96, founder of The Apostrophe Protection Society, has abandoned hope and given up his lifelong crusade. Mr Richards has devoted all his endeavours to advocating clarity.
