Munich Airport emergency: Lufthansa aircraft surrounded in dramatic scenes

Footage posted on Twitter shows several police, ambulance and fire engines dotted around the plane. The aircraft is stationary on the tarmac and appears to be outside the airport’s main terminal. The person posting the video tweeted: "Something happening with a @lufthansa plane at Munich Airport."

One Twitter user, citing live commercial airline tracking website Flightradar24, said the flight from Munich to Miami had earlier declared an emergency, and had landed safely back in Munich.

They said: “LH460 from Munich to Miami update.

“After declaring a earlier emergency, this flight returned to Munich airport and landed on runway 08R under emergency conditions.”

The flight was due to depart Munich at 10.50am UK time this morning but took off nearly an hour late at 11.45am.

One Twitter user claimed the plane had touched down after making an emergency landing.

They said: "Lufthansa flight LH460 back at Munich airport after emergency landing.

“Hope everyone is safe and ok.

“Emergency services were very well organised.”

Munich Airport is the second busiest in Germany in terms of passenger traffic after Frankfurt Airport.

It is also the eighth-busiest airport in Europe and the world’s 15th-busiest airport in terms of international passenger traffic.

Last week, Munich Airport announced record traffic figure for 2019, up four percent when handling 47.9million passengers.

The airport attributed this rise to its expanding route network, which led to a slight one percent increase in air traffic movements.

The major transport hub saw a nine percent year-on-year surge in passengers in the intercontinental sector.

There was also a four percent rise in European traffic and a one percent upturn in domestic travellers.

This is a breaking story. More to follow.
