BBC Weather: Carol Kirkwood warns frost and snow to batter UK as temperatures plummet

Carol Kirkwood explained Thursday and Friday will have cool starts with temperatures reaching the mid-teens. However, these temperatures are expected to fall as Britons head into the weekend and give way to a new weather system. She said: "On Thursday it is a cold start in the northwest highlands and a cold start in England and Wales.

"Some of us will even be seeing some frost.

"But temperatures will rise quite quickly during the day as the sun comes out."

She went on to say: "Through this evening and overnight we will still have our band of cloud and patchy rain and to the north of it there is still a chance of some frost.

"For England and Wales, it will be a similar story with temperatures falling to minus one and perhaps minus two with some patchy mist and fog."

Ms Kirkwood explained that Friday would be much of a repeat performance with a cold start that gets warmer through the day.

Into the weekend she noted temperatures will fall significantly and feel colder with a chance of snow.

She said: "Temperatures are slowly starting to slip and that will continue into the weekend.

"Eventually the front that has been with us all week clears off and high pressure establishes itself.

"This means a combination of rain, sleet, hail or indeed snow.

"We don't expect the snow to accumulate at lower levels.

"On Sunday it is expected to be an even colder day than Saturday but with brighter skies."
