Robert Kennedy's missing granddaughter and her son, 8, found drowned

The shock news came after the mother and eight-year-old son went missing after jumping into a boat.

Maeve Kennedy Townsend McKean, aged 40, and her son were in Maryland, America when they disappeared.

The pair were reported missing to the authorities when they failed to return.

Her husband, David McKean, confirmed his wife and son, Gideon, had disappeared to the Washington Post.

However, sadly, it was later also confirmed the pair had died.

Mr McKean said they had been at a family party at a waterfront house, when a ball being played with by the children fell into the water.

He added the pair had jumped into a canoe spontaneously to chase down the ball.

He told the Washington Post: "They popped into a canoe to chase it down.

"They just got farther out than they could handle and couldn't get back in."

Whilst Mr McKean did not say whether the canoe had been found at the time, authorities later reported they had found a canoe matching the description of the one which went missing.

It is believed high winds may have blown the boat off course.

WTOP reported the Governor of Maryland, Larry Hogan, opened a news conference this evening confirming the tragic outcome.

A statement from Mr Hogan shared earlier today said police had responded to a call of an overturned canoe in the Chesapeake Bay.

It read: "The preliminary investigation revealed that the pair may have been paddling the canoe from a residence in Shady Side, MD out into the Bay to retrieve a ball and were unable to paddle back to shore."

Mrs McKean was the grandniece of the late assassinated President John F. Kennedy.

She was also the daughter of former lieutenant governor Kathleen Kennedy Townsend.

A statement from the family before the tragic deaths were confirmed, read: "At this time our family asks for privacy and that everyone keep Maeve and Gideon in their prayers."

Authorities had been alerted to a pair struggling against the water by a concerned resident.

However, although the County Fire Department arrived with in five minutes of the call, it was said the conditions of the water were too dangerous.

Captain Erik Kornmeyer said : "Currents were pretty fast, they moved out of sight pretty quickly."

A search was carried out on Thursday night, resuming on Friday, by helicopters and boats.

Sadly, the Kennedy family, an American political dynasty, are no strangers to tragedy.

John F. Kennedy was assasinated in November 1963, during his time as President of the United States, with his brother Robert assassinated in 1968.

John F. Kennedy Jr., only three-years-old when his father was killed, later died in a plane crash in 1999.

More recently Saoirse Kennedy Hill, another granddaughter of Robert Kennedy, died at the age of 22.

The family are widely thought to be immensely privileged, however, Mrs McKean dispelled the notion in a 2008 interview.

She told Glamour magazine: "People think, because I’m a Kennedy, I’m extremely wealthy and don’t flaunt it. Ha! I have a great name, but by the time you get to the fourth generation, the money’s run out. We’re fortunate compared to the average American, but to think I’m a trust fund kid — so not true!”
