THANK YOU BRITAIN: Robert Jenrick amazed as volunteers deliver one MILLION food parcels

The NHS identified around 2.1 million people who were most at risk from coronavirus due to underlying health conditions and we asked them to stay at home and shield, with no face-to-face contact outside their household, except for carers. This is not an easy task, and it is even harder for those in this group who do not have family or friends close by to support them to get the vital provisions they need.

As a government it is our duty to ensure they have the support they need to shield from this virus, for as long as they need it.

That is why we quickly created a national system to bring food packages and essential supplies to their doorsteps.

We have been working closely in partnership with wholesalers Brakes and Bidfood to deliver these packages, which include necessary daily provisions as well as a personal favourite, Custard Creams!

And today, we have achieved a significant milestone – we have now delivered one million food packages across England.

This week alone we have delivered 330,000 more to those who have been asked to shield.

This is an astonishing achievement.

I want to extend my personal thanks to everyone who has been working round the clock to help make this happen.

From the people who work to pack and deliver these packages, to councils working tirelessly to ensure their local communities are protected and supported, we could not do this without you.

There hasn’t been an operation on a scale like this since the Second World War. This is a huge milestone for the government-led programme which will continue to provide the support that those most at risk need, for as long as they need it.

And it is at moments like this, when communities are coming together to protect and support vulnerable people that the spirit of Britain is at its best.

In every town, city and village there is work to be done to support our neighbours – and in each of us there is the power to do it.

I’d like to ask Daily Express readers in joining me this Bank Holiday, as we mark VE Day to pick up the phone and check up on any friends and family who might be alone.

When this is over, which it will be, we will each be proud of the role we played and together we will turn the tide.
